Yellowstone grizzly bears: New cause c?l?bre for effects of global warming?

For the first time, a US appellate court has ruled that the federal government must continue to protect an animal ? in this case, Yellowstone grizzly bears ? in part because of consequences of global warming.

Yellowstone National Park, Wyo.

Even more than their high-profile polar cousins, Yellowstone grizzly bears could become the newest cause c?l?bre for how global warming is threatening ecosystems worldwide.

On Nov. 22, a US appellate court ruled for the first time that the federal government must continue to protect an animal ? in this case, Yellowstone grizzlies ? in part because of the emerging effects of rising temperatures.

For environmentalists arguing that urgent congressional action to combat global warming is needed, the ruling is seen as a benchmark that establishes a legal foothold. It could lower the bar on when the government should take action to try to preserve species threatened by climate changes.

Moreover, the ruling opens the door to charges that federal programs designed to conserve species one at a time ? such as the Endangered Species Act (ESA) ? could be overwhelmed by a mega-event like climate change, which could affect whole suites of flora and fauna.

"It raises the question of what happens when one species gets in trouble, and its decline pulls the rug out from another species," says attorney Doug Honnold, who helped conservation groups halt the removal of grizzlies from federal protection.

In its ruling, the US Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals said the country's famous Yellowstone bruin population should remain classified as "threatened" under the ESA. The reason: One of its primary food sources is being wiped out, with help from global warming, many scientists say.

Grizzlies gorge on highly nutritious seeds in the cones of whitebark pines. Studies show the nutlike edibles are important in producing healthier, fatter bears and larger numbers of cubs. In addition, because whitebark grow on remote mountain ridgelines, their location draws foraging bears away from places where people live.

However, within the past decade, an outbreak of mountain pine beetles and a disease called blister rust have decimated the whitebark pine forest. Aerial surveys indicate that more than 80 percent of whitebark trees are now dead or dying.

Experts blame warmer temperatures with hastening the spread of beetles that otherwise would be beaten back by cold winters. They say the die-off is unprecedented, prompting an effort to have whitebark itself put on the federal protected list.

The Ninth Circuit's order stays in effect at least until the US Fish and Wildlife Service can figure out a way to deal with the whitebark pine forest's dramatic disappearance.

Indirectly, it also raises questions about similarly threatened species. For example, a tiny alpine rodent, the heat-intolerant pika, is disappearing from mountainous areas in the West. Biologists also worry about impacts of reduced snowpack trends on wolverine, white-tailed ptarmigan, and yellow-bellied marmot.

Bahrain: Blast on parked bus near British Embassy (AP)

MANAMA, Bahrain ? Bahrain's interior ministry says a blast occurred inside a minibus parked near the British Embassy, but there were no immediate reports of serious damage or injuries.

A brief statement posted by the ministry says the explosion occurred in a public parking area near the British diplomatic compound in the capital Manama. Investigators sealed off the area.

Security has been boosted sharply across Bahrain during annual Shiite religious ceremonies. Bahrain's majority Shiites began an uprising in February seeking greater rights from the Gulf kingdom's Sunni rulers.

An independent commission investigating Bahrain's unrest issued a report last month accusing security forces of abuses such as torture against suspected protesters.

WWII bomb in Germany evacuates 45,000

WWII bomb: a nearly 2-ton bomb discovered in a German town has caused a massive?evacuation.

Officials in the western German city of Koblenz say tens of thousands of residents have left their homes as experts prepare to defuse a massive World War II-era?bomb?discovered in the Rhine river.

City officials said Sunday that some 45,000 residents living within a radius of about 1.2 miles from the?bomb?site had to evacuate for the day by 0800 GMT.

It's one of Germany's biggest bomb-related evacuations since the war ended.

The British 1.8 ton?bomb?could cause massive damage if it exploded. It was found last week alongside a 275-pound U.S.?bomb?after the Rhine's water level fell due to lack of rain. Both?bombs?are to be defused.

Finding unexploded?bombs?dropped by the Allies over Germany is common even more than 60 years after the conflict.

Researchers print a fully-functional OLED control circuit using an inkjet

Don't worry, this isn't about teaching bacteria how to climb out of a petri dish and follow a subway map. The picture above actually shows an OLED display control circuit that was quickly and cheaply manufactured thanks to the joys of inkjet printing. Its makers at UCLA start-up Aneeve Nanotechnologies also claim their carbon nanotube circuit yields better performance than traditional silicon counterparts and should therefore be considered a competing technology. On the other hand, it's also true that inkjet circuitry has been around in various forms for years, so we must return to the fundamental question: will we ever be able to afford one of these?

NFL Draft: Saturday's prospect watch

December 3, 2011, 12:55 pm

If you're an Eagles fan looking toward the 2012 draft, here are a couple of players to watch on Saturday:

Georgia vs. LSU (4 p.m., CBS)

Cordy Glenn, OT/OG, Georgia, No. 71
?
I know if Andy Reid (assuming he's still with us next season) drafts another guard the city will collectively scream, but Glenn is a special talent. A starter since his freshman year, Glenn (6-6/336) has played both inside and out for the Bulldogs. He's a polished run blocker who locks on to defenders and buries them. While he has good enough feet to compete at tackle in the NFL, his ideal position probably will be inside, where that agility would be put to good use in Howard Mudd's blocking scheme. Look for Glenn at left tackle today. With the Eagles currently possessing a Top 10 pick in the 2012 draft, I wouldn't expect them to reach for a guy like Glenn that early. But, if Glenn slides into the top of the second round, all bets are off.

Wisconsin vs. Michigan State (8 p.m., FOX)

Aaron Henry, S, Wisconsin, No. 7

Maybe I'm being premature here, but the Eagles have appear to have swung and missed on Nate Allen. No one was a bigger fan of his before the 2010 draft than me, but the knee injury, questionable reads and a lack of physical play have soured me on him. Henry is a team captain and the heart of the Badgers? defense. Not an overly big guy (6-0/208) or particularly physical presence, Henry seems to be wherever the ball is. The red-shirt senior is mature and plays hard. Henry isn't an elite talent, and probably isn't as gifted coming out of school as Allen was, but he just a pure baller ? and the Eagles need more of those. He could go anywhere from the late third round on.

Oklahoma vs. Oklahoma State (8 p.m., ABC)

Ronnell Lewis, DE/OLB, Oklahoma, No. 56

The linebacker play Thursday night was a nightmare (again) and there has been little hint that it will improve in 2012 with this same cast of characters. Unfortunately for Eagles fans we might not get to see Ronnell Lewis play today because of a sprained knee he incurred in the Sooners' loss to Baylor two weeks ago. Lewis (6-2/244), a junior and in his first season as a full-time starter, is a powerful player who plays a hybrid DE/OLB. He is strong, agile and, most importantly, he tackles. Lewis hits hard and knows how to wrap up ? something sorely needed in this town. Check out this link? to see what Oklahoma may be missing in today's Bedlam Game. If he decides to come out I fully expect Lewis to be a mid to late first-round pick.

EU, tech firms link up to protect children online (Reuters)

BRUSSELS (Reuters) ? The European Commission joined forces with major technology firms including Apple, Facebook and Google on Thursday to improve the protection of children online.

The coalition, which includes 28 companies, will develop an age-based online ratings system and aims to strengthen privacy settings. It also plans by the end of next year to make it easier to report inappropriate content.

Other measures include improving parental controls and enhancing cooperation among law enforcement and hotline authorities to remove online material showing sexual abuse.

"This new coalition should provide both children and parents with transparent and consistent protection tools to make the most of the online world," said Neelie Kroes, the EU commissioner who deals with digital technology policy.

The formation of the coalition follows a report by the European Commission in June, which found 14 leading social networking sites, such as Facebook, inadequately protected children's profiles and data.

British-based group Childnet International, which aims to protect children online, said the coalition was a good start.

"We welcome this initiative and we are hopeful of what it might achieve," said Childnet International Chief Executive Will Gardner. "We are looking at a statement of purpose, this is the beginning."

Many children become active online as early as seven and 38 percent of 9- to 12-year-olds have their own social networking profiles, according to EU research. Over 30 percent of children access the Internet via a mobile device and 26 percent via video game consoles.

Other companies in the coalition include Apple, BSkyB, BT, Deutsche Telekom AG, Nintendo, Nokia and Orange.

Verizon Galaxy Nexus landing in Best Buy on December 11th?

Nexus Prime at Best Buy
The release dates we've been hearing for the Verizon version of the Galaxy Nexus have been all over the map. The latest rumors had it pegged for December 8th, and that still may be true for official Big Red shops, but now a source inside Best Buy is telling us the big box electronics retailer won't have them in stock until the 11th. The image above, supposedly taken from a Best Buy inventory system, lists the SCH-i515 as hitting the stock room on December 11th of 2011. What it doesn't list, however, is a street date. The phones could go on sale that day, or the next or a week later -- it's really all just guesswork without an official announcement. While the photos certainly seem legit, there are a few discrepancies that give us pause. Particularly, the lighter weight and thinner profile than what is listed on the Google specs page -- 9.34mm versus 9.47mm and 140g instead of 150. But, we're not writing this off as a fake just yet.

[Thanks, anonymous]

Teen tweeter won't apologize to Kan. governor

A Kansas teenager who wrote a disparaging tweet about Gov. Sam Brownback said Sunday that she is rejecting her high school principal's demand for a written apology.

Emma Sullivan, 18, of the Kansas City suburb of Fairway, said she isn't sorry and doesn't think such a letter would be sincere.

The Shawnee Mission East senior was taking part in a Youth in Government program last week in Topeka, Kan., when she sent out a tweet from the back of a crowd of students listening to Brownback's greeting. From her cellphone, she thumbed: "Just made mean comments at gov. brownback and told him he sucked, in person (hash)heblowsalot."

She actually made no such comment and said she was "just joking with friends." But Brownback's office, which monitors social media for postings containing the governor's name, saw Sullivan's post and contacted the Youth in Government program.

Sullivan received a scolding at school and was ordered to send Brownback an apology letter. She said Prinicipal Karl R. Krawitz even suggested talking points for the letter she was supposed to turn in Monday.

The situation exploded after Sullivan's older sister contacted the media. Since then, Sullivan's following on Twitter has grown to about 3,000 people, up from about 65 before the tweet. She said she thinks the tweet has helped "open up dialogue" about free speech in social media..

"I would do it again," she said.

Sullivan has received emails from attorneys but is waiting to see what happens when she refuses to hand in a letter. Krawitz, her principal, told The Kansas City Star previously that the situation is a "private issue, not a public matter" but didn't return a phone message from The Associated Press at his home Sunday.

She hasn't heard from Brownback or his staff. She said she wouldn't mind sitting down and talking to the governor.

Sullivan said she disagrees with Brownback politically, particularly his decision to veto the Kansas Arts Commission's entire budget, making Kansas the only state in the nation to eliminate arts funding. Brownback has argued arts programs can flourish with private dollars and that state funds should go to core government functions, such as education and social services.

"I think it would be interesting to have a dialogue with him," she said. "I don't know if he would do it or not though. And I don't know that he would listen to what I have to say."

Sherriene Jones-Sontag, the governor's spokeswoman, told The Star previously that Sullivan's message wasn't respectful and that it takes mutual respect to "really have a constructive dialogue." Brownback's office didn't return calls or emails Sunday from the AP.

Sullivan's mother, Julie, said she isn't angry with her daughter, even though she thinks she "could have chosen different words."

"She wasn't speaking to the 3,000 followers she has now," Julie Sullivan said. "She was talking to 65 friends. And also it's the speech they use today. It's more attention grabbing. I raised my kids to be independent, to be strong, to be free thinkers. If she wants to tweet her opinion about Gov. Brownback, I say for her to go for it and I stand totally behind her."

As Cyber Monday approaches, Black Friday sets new records

Black Friday this year set new records for in-store and online buying. Despite high unemployment and a generally worrisome economy, nearly half of all Americans went shopping.

Black Friday this year appears to have set records for consumer frenzy ? and not just in fisticuffs, pepper spray, and mall parking lot rage.

According?to ShopperTrak, which counts retail and mall foot traffic, Black Friday sales increased 6.6 percent over the same day last year, totaling $11.40 billion in retail purchases ? the biggest dollar amount ever spent during the day.

?Despite our sluggish economy, shoppers proved they are looking for value and ready to buy if given a good customer experience,? said ShopperTrak founder Bill Martin in a statement. ?This is the largest year-over-year gain in ShopperTrak?s National Retail Sales Estimate for Black Friday since the 8.3 percent increase we saw between 2007 and 2006.?

Part of the increase this year is tied to ever-earlier sales, some on Thanksgiving night. This includes early online sales as well. Record numbers of pre-promotions and extended shopping hours in the weeks leading up to Black Friday account for some of these increases, according to ShopperTrak.

IBM?s Coremetrics retail benchmark (based on more than one million transactions at 500 retailers nationwide) shows that ?shoppers took advantage of early sales this holiday driving a 39.3 percent increase in online Thanksgiving day spending while setting the stage for 24.3 percent online growth on Black Friday compared to the same period last year.?

The National Retail Federation (NRF) was expecting 152 million Americans to shop on Black Friday ? up from 138 million last year and nearly half the US population.

The NRF also notes increased use of social media in finding bargains and therefore boosting buying.

The organization?s survey found 17.3 percent monitoring retailers? Facebook pages and 11.3 percent checking out group-buying sites like Groupon and LivingSocial. Of those who own tablet devices and who plan to shop for or research holiday items this year, one in five were expected to seek out group buying sites and 31.2 percent are checking out retailers? Facebook pages, according to the NRF.

Tentatively, at least, experts predict more good news for retailers beyond Black Friday (named for the day when many retailers say their annual financial situation becomes profitable) ? despite high unemployment rates and a generally worrisome economy.

?A solid Black Friday suggests the rest of the season should be pretty good,? Ken Perkins, president of Swampscott, Massachusetts- based Retail Metrics told Bloomberg News. ?Those who have jobs have been willing to spend.?

Still, it?s just one day, notes ShopperTrak?s Bill Martin.?

?It remains to be seen whether consumers will sustain this behavior through the holiday shopping season,? he said.

As for that woman who pepper-sprayed fellow shoppers crowded around a crate of Xbox video game players at a Wal-Mart in the upscale Porter Ranch section of the San Fernando Valley in California, she has yet to be charged.

The woman surrendered to authorities but was released pending further investigation after she refused to discuss the incident with police, according to the Associated Press. Police are still interviewing witnesses to the attack.
