Star's strong game in record 125th international start keys victory in friendly

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Apparently, the desire still burns in Landon Donovan.

Days after wondering publicly how much longer he will have the hunger to play at an elite level, Donovan scored his first international hat trick in five years, leading the Americans over Scotland 5-1 in an exhibition game Saturday night.

As the Americans began a stretch of five games in 18 days, Donovan returned to the U.S. national team following an eight-month absence.

"I don't want to be mistaken for not caring," Donovan said. "I care, and I like being a part of this team. I'm a professional, and I know how to do my job. I've been doing this a long time."

Donovan beat goalkeeper Allan McGregor on the rebound of his own initial shot in the third minute, then added goals in the 60th from a Jermaine Jones layback and in the 65th off a Michael Bradley pass. Donovan raised his career total to 49 goals with his third international hat trick and made an American record 125th international start, one more than the previous mark set by defender Jeff Agoos from 1988-03.

"Tonight was one of those nights when most things went right," Donovan said. "While most goals fell to me, a lot of people did a lot of things right to make that happen."

Donovan scored four goals against Cuba in the CONCACAF Gold Cup in July 2003 and had three against El Salvador in a March 2007 exhibition.

The U.S. had won three consecutive games by a score of 1-0, including a victory at Italy, but entered talking of generating offensive firepower as the Americans prepare for World Cup qualifying.

"Now, we have Landon back and he gave us the goals," U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann said. "We can't complain tonight."

On the sixth anniversary of his national team debut, Bradley scored on a spectacular 30-yard, right-footed half-volley in the 11th minute. Jones got his second international goal in the 70th off an assist from Donovan, who had skipped eight national team matches in a row because of injuries and commitments to the Los Angeles Galaxy.

"Obviously, we were very pleased," Klinsmann said. "I think we set the tone and kept the rhythm through the entire game. Obviously, as a coach it was fun to watch."

Scotland scored in the 15th minute when American defender Geoff Cameron chested Kenny Miller's header past Tim Howard for an own goal.

The U.S. has won five straight following an 1-4-1 start under Klinsmann, who replaced Bob Bradley after the 4-2 loss to Mexico in last year's Gold Cup final.

Forward Terrence Boyd got his first start for the U.S., which used an attacking 4-3-3 formation. Midfielder Joe Corona entered in the second half for his national team debut. Fabian Johnson was at left back, a position he played for Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga, paired with Steve Cherundolo on the right.

"Tonight, you saw many elements of what we're always talking about, what we're trying step-by-step to develop," Klinsmann said. "It's a fast-paced game. All those elements I think we saw a lot today. It's obviously a lot more difficult to play that way against Brazil or Italy, but the players they understand more and more what we're trying to achieve. Today, it was really fun to watch."

Clint Dempsey - who has not played together with Donovan under Klinsmann - missed the match while recovering from a groin strain. Jozy Altidore also missed the game because AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands refused to let him report until Monday.

'Anti-psychotic drug kills cancer stem cells without side-effects ...

VANCOUVER (Xinhua) - A team of Canadian scientists have discovered that thioridazine, a drug used to treat psychotic disorder, could successfully kill cancer stem cells in humans without the toxic side-effects on normal cells.

The research, published Thursday in the science journal CELL, may pave the way for the development of anticancer drugs for treatment of various cancers.

Conventional cancer treatments, like chemotherapy, work in a way that is toxic to cells, which may also lead to side-effects such as hair loss, nausea and anemia, according to the researchers from McMaster University.

Stem cells have long been believed to be the source of many cancers. In 1997, Canadian researchers first identified cancer stem cells in certain types of leukemia. Cancer stem cells have since been identified in blood, breast, brain, lung, gastrointestinal, prostate and ovarian cancer.

"The unusual aspect of our finding is the way it kills cancer stem cells, by differentiating them and changing them into cells that are non-cancerous," said Mick Bhatia, the principal investigator for the study and scientific director of McMaster's Stem Cell and Cancer Research Institute.

"We think this lack of toxicity is why it doesn't have effects on the normal cells, which would be beneficial to the patients," Bhatia said.

Bhatia said their next step was to test thioridazine in clinical trials, focusing on patients with acute myeloid leukemia whose disease has relapsed after chemotherapy. He wants to find out if the drug can put their cancer into remission, and prevent the cancer from coming back by targeting the root of the cancer (cancer stem cells).

Bhatia's team also found that thioridazine works through the dopamine receptor on the surface of the cancer cells in both leukemia and breast cancer patients.

The finding means it may be possible to use thioridazine as a biomarker that would allow early detection and treatment of breast cancer and early signs of leukemia progression, he said.

The research team would also look into the effectiveness of the drug in other types of cancer. Bhatia said they will collaborate with academic groups as well as industry to move forward.

"The goal for all of the partners is the same - to find unique drugs to change the way we tackle and treat cancer," he said.

Use a customer perception audit to watch the signals your business ...

When a business needs help with accounting, a certified public accountant often is retained for their expertise. When things do not add up ? cash flow isn?t what it is supposed to be, inventories are too low or too high ? we see the signals right away. Unfortunately, business owners and managers often do not perceive the signals their businesses send out to consumers.

Consumers also see ?signals.? Most are visual (more than 90 percent), others are vocal or come from the sense of smell. These upfront signals create perceptions and expectations that strongly influence what a consumer believes about your business and you personally. If the signals are favorable, you?re likely to win at business; if not, the game may be lost. Even worse, those who have unfavorable impressions not only do not come back, but are likely to tell five to 10 or more people about their experience.

To avoid this situation and to improve your odds of winning, it is advisable to conduct or have conducted for you a ?customer perception audit? (the other type of CPA). This ?audit? is designed to spot those negative signals that directly set consumers? attitudes toward your business. These signals create perceptions that are difficult to change and to overcome.

Many businesses do not realize there are signals that can be sent before a consumer even enters your business or encounters your service. For example, what happens when a consumer calls your business? How long does it take to answer the call? Is it a professional, welcoming response? What does your business look like on the Web? Is your website attractive, informative and easy to navigate? Is there a customer contact link, or phone number listed? What does your signage and the front of your building and-or door look like? What signal does this sight send: clean and appealing or dirty and unattractive? Speaking of doors, are they freshly painted and-or is the glass clean? Clean reflects fresh and new. Consumers like that signal.

Once they are in the door, what do they see? Is the floor clean and-or carpet clean? If there is a plant, is it healthy or attractive or sending off the signal of death? Are your business, merchandise, and customer service personnel sending positive signals and impressions? Unless you?re in the antique business, consumers prefer new, clean and uncluttered. All of these signals create an atmosphere of acceptance, which, combined with great customer service, will help you command premium prices and repeat business.

Another set of signals focus on lighting and color. Is the lighting adequate and appropriate for your type of business? There is no bigger turnoff to a food service customer than a light or ceiling fixture displaying dead flies or bugs. Likewise, if you?re dealing with senior citizens, your lighting must be bright and all printed materials have type a little larger on a good contrasting background. If you?re selling upscale or expensive premium products, is there an upscale color deployed? Black, gold and silver are perceived as giving the upscale signal; orange, yellow, and red the ?price/promotion? signal; and green and blue for environmental products and services. Are your colors appropriate to your product, pricing and marketing objectives?

What signals do you give out that tell customers you want them to come back? In our highly competitive marketplace, more than the sincere ?thank you? is required. Do you have ?bring them back? signals such as a percent-off or money-off your next purchase thank you promotion card? Customers want welcome-back incentives and consider these your signal of valuing their business.

One of the most difficult signals to deal with is the appropriateness of an employee?s attitude and demeanor with consumers. This can be especially challenging in a family business if it is a family member that is sending off the wrong signals. Kiss-of-death signals are things such as paying more attention to someone on the phone than to the customer in front of you, or employee-on-employee disagreements or confrontations. Place yourself in the customer?s shoes and you will quickly discover unacceptable signals.Yes, sometimes the only solution is to change personnel to send the right signal and satisfy and retain the customer.

If you do not wish to hire an objective third party to conduct a detailed customer perception audit, take the time to develop your own checklist. Walk through all the points of encounter as if you were the customer. Ask yourself, how did your business do? What needs to be fixed, improved or immediately changed? A customer perception audit is likely to improve your customer retention and overall business performance.

The 2013 Ford Escape is the only compact SUV with a choice of three engines. It would be easier to recommend the excellent 240-horsepower 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine if the 178-horsepower 1.6-liter version weren?t more affordable, more efficient, just as smooth, and still plenty powerful for most. The base 2.5-liter engine is probably just fine ? we haven?t driven the latest iteration ? but we?d buy a different compact SUV before buying the base Escape S with which that engine is paired. All three engines are paired with a responsive 6-speed automatic transmission with manual shift control, driving either the front wheels (FWD) or all four (4WD). If you want 4WD you?ll have to choose one of the EcoBoost engines. And if you want the Escape?s full towing capacity of 3,500 pounds, you?re into the 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine (and the towing package eliminates the hands-free liftgate option).

At the other end of the price spectrum, a fully loaded Escape Titanium will top out at more than $37,000. Finland gunman who killed 1, wounded 8 is arrested

HELSINKI (AP) ? A gunman in southern Finland has killed one person and wounded eight others in what appeared to be a random shooting, police said Saturday.

An 18-year-old man shot at people from a low rooftop in central Hyvinkaa, some 50 kilometers (30 miles) north of the capital, Helsinki, said Markku Tuominen, officer in charge of the investigation.

The suspect was arrested early Saturday, he said. He did not resist arrest, Tuominen said.

An 18-year-old woman was killed in the shootings, Tuominen said. Two people were critically injured, including a police officer who arrived at the scene soon after Hyvinkaa police received an alert before 2 a.m. (2300 GMT Friday).

Bill would require digital textbooks in California

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) ? A bill that would require textbook publishers to make the same content available to California school districts in digital format has passed unanimously in the state Senate.

Lawmakers approved SB1154 by Republican Sen. Mimi Walters of Lake Forest on Friday.

Walters says her bill addresses the technology gap between California schools and those in the rest of the country. It also requires publishers to offer their content in sections so districts can buy only the parts they want.

The bill also allows school districts to create online digital textbook databases that students could access from anywhere.

Small publishers with fewer than 100 employees would be exempt from the requirement. The Association of American Publishers is the only listed opponent of the legislation.

Eaton to buy Cooper Industries for $11.8 billion

(Reuters) - Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corp struck a deal to buy electrical equipment maker Cooper Industries Plc for $11.8 billion in cash and stock and said it would shift its incorporation to Ireland to save on taxes.

The deal, Eaton's biggest ever, will allow the company to offer a broader range of electrical products, such as lighting and wiring devices, to markets ranging from mining to oil and gas and utilities, and help it expand in emerging markets while cutting costs, Eaton said.

The deal was the biggest of several announced on Monday. Analysts said acquisitions are one way for companies to grow in a sluggish global economy.

"It drives the point home that acquisitions are an increasingly important growth avenue in a slow-growth world," said analyst Matt Collins of Edward Jones. "Record low interest rates and solid balance sheets make it that much easier to get deals done."

Cleveland, Ohio-based Eaton will pay $72 per share for Cooper - $39.15 in cash and the rest in stock. Eaton shareholders will control almost three-quarters of the new Eaton Global Corp Plc, and administrative headquarters will remain in Ohio.

The pricing appears to be fair or "slightly expensive," valuing Cooper at 11.5 times projected earnings, JPMorgan analyst Ann Duignan said.

Cooper shares were up 26 percent at $70.24 in afternoon trading, the day's biggest gainer on the New York Stock Exchange. Eaton stock inched up 7 cents to $42.47.

Incorporating in Ireland will shave about $160 million off Eaton's annual tax bill, said Chief Executive Sandy Cutler, who will lead the combined company. But he said synergies, not tax reduction, were the primary motivation for the deal.

"It does afford us some global cash management and associated tax benefits, but (Irish incorporation) is really a byproduct of this transaction," Cutler told Reuters in an interview.

When Cooper incorporated in Ireland last decade, it was one of several U.S. industrial companies, including Ingersoll Rand and Tyco International , that picked either Ireland or Switzerland to help lower their taxes.

Re-incorporation is a legal move that rarely has any bearing on where a company's headquarters are located. U.S. companies have been re-incorporating in Ireland and Switzerland in recent years, instead of the offshore tax havens of Bermuda and the Cayman Islands, reasoning that Ireland and Switzerland offer better protection from U.S. tax claims than small countries that are more dependent on U.S. goodwill.

The tax component of the Eaton-Cooper deal is unique and is unlikely to be replicated by other companies, said Nicholas Heymann, co-group head of global industrial infrastructure at William Blair & Co in New York.

He said Cooper moved its incorporation to Ireland ahead of a change in U.S. tax laws that would have left it liable for a large tax bill.

Heymann said the deal sets up Cooper CEO Kirk Hachigian as a likely successor to Eaton's Cutler.

Cutler, in the interview, said it was not yet clear what role Hachigian would have in the combined company.

CONSOLIDATION

The deal could spur more consolidation in the electrical equipment industry. Increased demand for electronics and retrofits to improve energy efficiency is prompting multi-industry companies such as Eaton and ABB Ltd to expand their electrical equipment offerings.

Swiss engineering group ABB bought U.S. electrical components maker Thomas & Betts in January for $3.9 billion to ramp up its presence in the world's largest market for low-voltage products.

Analysts have said electrical products makers Hubbell Inc and Acuity Brands Inc could be attractive targets for industrial conglomerates such as France's Schneider Electric and Germany's Siemens AG .

More room for consolidation remains in the industry, said Shawn Severson, an analyst with JMP Securities. "The obvious one everyone is looking to is Hubbell. Hubbell is a mini Cooper - it's got a similar business mix."

Severson named Emerson Electric and Schneider as potential buyers.

COST SAVINGS

Century-old Eaton makes power systems for data centers, hydraulics used in machinery, and truck transmissions. It recorded 2011 sales of $16 billion. It has stepped up acquisitions in recent years, closing nine deals last year.

Cooper, based in Dublin, had 2011 sales of $5.4 billion, with most of its sales to utilities and industrial markets. Its products include safety systems, lighting, circuit protectors and wiring devices used in homes and commercial buildings.

The Cooper acquisition will reduce Eaton's costs by $260 million a year by 2016, while adding $115 million a year to revenue, Eaton said.

The deal is expected to close in late 2012, Cutler said. The new company will generate some 59 percent of its sales from electrical businesses, with hydraulic, aerospace and truck markets together making up the rest.

The deal will also help Eaton diversify geographically, said Catherine Avery, chief executive officer of CAIM LLC, which holds shares of the company.

"They're going to dominate that electrical power equipment segment," she said. "It's taking a long-term point of view and saying, 'There are areas of the globe that are expanding and when we do get into a better economic environment, we're going to be there.'"

Eaton said the deal is expected to reduce 2013 operating earnings by 10 cents a share but add to earnings thereafter.

Eaton has secured a $6.75 billion bridge financing commitment from Morgan Stanley and Citibank to pay for the cash portion of the deal. It said it plans to issue new debt, use cash on hand and possibly sell some assets to pay down the loan.

Eaton last year had an effective worldwide tax rate of 12.9 percent, up from 9.5 percent in 2010, and had a tax credit in 2009, according to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

The company's U.S. federal income taxes in 2011 totaled $85 million, with an additional $2 million in U.S. state and local taxes, on U.S. profits of $375 million.

Its foreign taxes in 2011 came to $186 million on foreign profits of $1.18 billion.

Other large U.S.-listed industrial stocks were higher across the board on Monday. Parker Hannifin Corp shares were up 3 percent at $82.99, Emerson Electric stock was up 1.9 percent at $46.78, and General Electric Co was up 1.1 percent at $19.15. Hubbell was up 4.7 percent at $76.49, and Acuity jumped 6.8 percent to $53.10.

Citi and Morgan Stanley advised Eaton on the deal, while Goldman Sachs advised Cooper.

Law enforcement officials have been systematically tracking license plates for a long time ? at the border, for instance. But a DEA project in Utah may be overstepping the bounds of good governance, tracking every vehicle on a major highway and sharing the data with thousands of other agencies.

Using official or hidden cameras to snap pictures of license plates isn't a new technology by any means, though it is proliferating rather quickly. In fact, this writer got a ticket from one just last week. But they are usually restricted to monitoring traffic or borders. Recently, however, police have begun centralizing records in a number of places: Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Washington, D.C. So now a state would not only know when you crossed the border, but when you entered a city, when you turned at various intersections and which way, and it is holding all that data for up to three years.

The DEA is proposing such a system for the Utah portion of the?Interstate 15 highway, citing installations in California and Texas "drug trafficking corridors" and border use. The ACLU and?Utah's legislators are skeptical that such a measure is lawful or well-advised.

There are already automatic license plate recorders in place in Utah, but the DEA would centralize the data and make it accessible to law enforcement around the country. Data would be kept on record for two years.

Now, argues the ACLU, it's one thing for an intersection to record traffic violations and license plates??after all, you're in public. And it's another for a police department to monitor state highways?for a known and wanted plate or vehicle. But a federally?run program that appears to be created with the object of disbursing the information nationally is a serious step up in scope, and there doesn't appear to be much in the way of limitation or documentation, contends the civil liberties organization.

The DEA says the tracking data would only be used in the pursuit of drug traffickers and for investigation of "serious crimes." But as the ACLU points out, and as history has shown when other valuable data (like GPS, internet records and DNA) has been made accessible to law enforcement, the cases for which sensitive data is used tend to multiply over time ? and create new privacy concerns.

Held at the American Association for the Advancement of Science, "STEM Enterprise: Measures for Innovation and Competitiveness," is designed to measure the impact and effectiveness of all public, private and academic money spent on research and development in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) area.

According to Freeman, the absence of a general quantitative measure of innovation "mars our ability to analyze the magnitude and direction of innovation and to develop policies to encourage it. "I argue that this is the next key step in social measurement necessary for us to understand the new economics of a knowledge-based economy. I will also talk about some related innovative uses of Internet-based data to produce 'leading indicators' of the direction of science and innovation."

Miller's Florida fling earns walk-on spot at USF

There is a senior graduating from Williamsville East who will be part of a Big East football program next year.

Trent Miller relocated from Williamsville to Palmetto, Fla., this past season in part to pursue a dream of playing Division I-A college football.

It worked.

Miller accepted an offer of a preferred walk-on spot with South Florida, so he's guaranteed by coach Skip Holtz to be on the roster this fall.

Miller's road to Florida began during middle school when he trained for baseball during spring-break trips to the IMG Academy in nearby Bradenton. One year, knowing that Miller also played football, his baseball coach introduced him to IMG football coach Chris Weinke, the Heisman Trophy winner at Florida State.

"He said he saw something in me," Miller said of Weinke.

That led to Miller choosing to train for football in a three-week period prior to his junior year. Miller quarterbacked Williamsville East to the Class A semifinals and earned second-team Class A North honors.

But the seed had been planted. Following his junior basketball season, Miller relocated with his mother to Palmetto. The Millers were already planning to uproot -- father Neal, the former principal at Will East and superintendent at Medina, had recently taken a job as the superintendent at Briarcliff Manor, about 30 minutes outside New York City.

"Coach Weinke found a high school that didn't have a quarterback," said Miller, "and it ended up that it worked out for me and my mom for me to train down there at IMG and play down there."

Miller said it was tough to leave his friends, including his girlfriend, as well as personal coach Jim Kubiak, the former Navy standout who he worked with for years and who he credits with much of his development. He also said there was some hesitancy from his new teammates, but that "I had to earn their trust in spring ball -- by the summer they were treating me like I had grown up there."

That's right -- spring practice for football -- something that doesn't exist in New York. Another big difference? Speed.

"Technically-wise it was the same as it was up here," he said. "The speed of the game was just faster."

He played in front of 5,000 people at home games and had his image on a poster that was put up in shops all around Palmetto. His performances fit the script. The 6-foot-2, 205-pounder had an outstanding season, leading Palmetto to the state semifinals. He had nearly 2,500 yards passing along with 32 touchdowns and just seven interceptions.

A combination of a brief illness to his mother, the sale of the family home and his desire to graduate from Will East brought Miller back to Western New York in January. He says he gets kidded by classmates about leaving the Flames: "I can totally see their point of view."

But they have to see where he's coming from, too. He had an opportunity to play in a hotbed of high school football, and in his first spring practice there were about 100 schools coming by to scout Palmetto.

"The facts are that there are more scouts down there, because there are more players that end up going I-A," said Miller. "Every school scouts in Florida."

He ultimately picked South Florida over Wagner.

Lenovo announces the ThinkPad X1 Carbon, a 14-inch Ultrabook with Ivy Bridge, optional 3G and a 1600 x 900 display

Yes, that laptop you see up there is called the ThinkPad X1 and yes, it's the successor to the X1 we reviewed around this time last year. But, folks, this isn't your typical refresh. The X1, once a 13-inch system, has grown up into a 14-inch ultraportable, now being marketed as an Ultrabook. Despite gaining an inch in screen real estate, though, it manages to be both thinner and lighter than its predecessor: 3.0 pounds and roughly 18mm (.71 inches) thick, down from 3.7 pounds / .84 inches. (As the name suggests, carbon fiber is the secret ingredient.) Chances are, you won't have the luxury of comparing the two systems side by side, but coming from someone who reviewed the original, we can assure you the difference is noticeable, even going off of sheer muscle memory. That bodes well for people picking up the X1 for the first time.

But those aren't the only changes the X1 has undergone. Lenovo also bumped the resolution from 1366 x 768 to 1600 x 900, and made some subtle tweaks to the backlit, spill-resistant keyboard. 3G connectivity is also a major selling point, though that was an optional feature last time around, too. As you could've guessed, it packs an Ivy Bridge processor, coupled with Intel's vPro management technology and (we assume) integrated graphics. Like the last-gen model, it makes use of Lenovo's RapidCharge tech, which allows the notebook to re-charge up to 80 percent capacity in 30 minutes. Unfortunately, though, the company's staying mum on battery life claims for the time being. Another teensy detail we don't know? Price. So far, we only know it'll go on sale sometime this summer.
