Nearly 250 of 362 saved from Papua New Guinea ship (AP)

PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea ? A day after rescuing nearly 250 survivors of a ferry sinking, crews searching for more than 110 other people aboard came up empty Friday off Papua New Guinea's east coast. Many of the missing may still be in the vessel, now at the bottom of the sea.

The MV Rabaul Queen sank Thursday in rough seas, and big waves and strong winds continued to make rescue efforts difficult Friday. But Capt. Nurur Rahman, rescue coordinator for Papua New Guinea's National Maritime Safety Authority, said he had not given up hope of finding more survivors.

"I do not presume them to be dead yet," he told Australian Broadcasting Corp.

There were no reports of any more survivors by late Friday, and no bodies have been found.

Rony Naigu, a National Maritime Safety Authority official, told ABC about 100 people are thought to have been trapped inside when the ship was hit by three large waves and sank.

"The sea was really rough, windy, big waves. The boat tilted once, then twice, then three times and it went over," said Alice Kakamara, who was recovering in a Lea hospital Friday after inhaling toxins during the sinking.

"There was oil everywhere," she said.

Kakamara said she might not have survived had she not been with her 11-year-old nephew, who urged her not to give up. They found a lifeboat, but it too was sinking. She said she put the boy on another boat and later heard from relatives that he is OK.

The ferry's owners, Papua New Guinea-based Rabaul Shipping Company, said there had been 350 passengers and 12 crew aboard the 22-year-old Japanese-built ferry when it went down Thursday morning while traveling from Kimbe on the island of New Britain to the coastal city of Lae on the main island. A police official said most of those aboard were students.

"We are stunned and utterly devastated by what has happened," managing director Peter Sharp said in a statement.

The company said the cause of the disaster remained unclear, but National Weather Service chief Sam Maiha told Papua New Guinea's Post-Courier newspaper that shipping agencies had been warned to keep ships moored this week because of strong winds.

By nightfall Thursday, 246 survivors had been rescued by merchant ships battling 16-foot (5-meter) swells and 45 mph (75 kph) winds at the disaster scene 50 miles (80 kilometers) east of Lae and 10 miles (16 kilometers) from shore, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority said.

Capt. Rahman said the sea temperature was above 68 degrees Fahrenheit (20 degrees Celsius) ? warm enough for people to survive for an extended period.

He said most of those rescued had been wearing life jackets.

He said the 155-foot (47-meter) ferry sank in 3,300-foot (one-kilometer) deep water, making it difficult to determine whether bodies were trapped inside.

The survivors were delivered to Lae, the South Pacific country's second-largest city, by five ships early Friday, said the AMSA, which is assisting Papua New Guinea authorities with the rescue.

"None of them had sustained any real injuries. They were pretty cold and miserable," Lae Chamber of Commerce president Alan McLay told Sky News television.

The search continued at first light Friday with three ships, two airplanes and two helicopters, AMSA said.

An angry crowd threw stones at the Kimbe office of Rabaul Shipping Company on Thursday night, outraged at a lack of information, police said.

"There were a lot of people crying and then they wanted to know the fate of their loved ones, the people actually who were on board," Kimbe Police Inspector Samson Siguyaru told ABC.

"I had to send in the police to rescue (staff and), get them out of the office to a location where it is safe," he added.

Siguyaru said the passengers were mostly students returning to school at Lae.

The company said the ferry's captain had made routine radio contact with another vessel before sinking and gave no indication anything was wrong.

Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Peter O'Neill said the cause of the accident was unknown, but acknowledged that safety in the shipping industry was lax.

"We need to bring some safety measures back into this industry," O'Neill told reporters.

Australia's High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea, Ian Kemish, said bad weather played a part.

"I think it's a fair bet that the very severe weather that's being experienced in some parts of Papua New Guinea played a role, but I can't say much more about the cause of the sinking beyond that at this stage," he told ABC.

First War of Independence.

Hey...this is just a quick, brief run down of an idea I've been having lately, having studied the First War of Scottish Independence. I'm really interested in doing a roleplay based around this from 1286-1329, based around the uprisings against English rule from Balliol to William Wallace and Robert the Bruce, with people taking on the roles of historical characters, and making up their own. Historical accuracy will be observed as far as possible...since the story is interesting enough. But also there would be new things if necessary. There would be plenty of drama and war already provided by history, but I'm interested in doing something based around this as it would be great to bring it to life. At the same time I realise many people may not know much about Scottish history if you're from other countries, so I'd be open to any historical ideas, though I can assure you the Wars of Independence in Scotland makes a really fascinating topic; villains and heroes, war, love, and so on. I was searching for roleplays around this and I only found mention of someone else replying to a topic giving an idea about it for a roleplay (though he only mentioned Bruce; here I want a longer time period to cover the whole first war). If you're interested then reply, PM me, and I can tell you a bit about Scottish history of people express some interest. Of course, this may all backfire and fail horribly and nobody expresses interest, mais, c'est la vie! Oh yes, I also know I'm rather new but please don't let that put you off.

Anyway, that's all...as I said if you're interested you can maybe read about the history and become more interested, or ask me for more information, request characters, that sort of thing. And if not, I shall continue on into the night!

China bans toddler palm-reading assessments (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? China has banned kindergartens in a northern province from offering palm-reading tests that the schools had claimed could predict toddlers' intelligence level and potential, state news agency Xinhua reported on Wednesday.

Although many parents in Taiyuan, capital of Shanxi province, eagerly brought their children to be tested, some later complained about the high cost and raised questions about the testing method, which test-givers said could reveal the children's aptitude in music, mathematics and languages.

"We have issued a circular to criticize the three kindergartens that offered palm-reading tests for 1,200 yuan ($190) per person," Xinhua quoted Ma Zhaoxing, the local education bureau chief, as saying, adding that the practice had been banned.

Authorities were investigating whether the company that designed the tests, Shanxi Daomeng Culture Communication Co., Ltd., had violated any laws, Xinhua said.

Fortune-telling, including palm-reading, has deep roots in Chinese tradition, although China's leaders have discouraged and punished devotees of the practice which they brand superstition.

The Real Housewives of Atlanta Recap: South Africa, Home Away From Home

After an episode of packing last week, The Real Housewives of Atlanta officially arrived in Cape Town, South Africa on Sunday and the country will never be the same.

We relive the etiquette lessons and unbelievable screeching in THG's +/- recap!

With Kroy off at training camp, Kim stays home with the new baby and we barely see her except for a family dinner with her parents. Have I mentioned I find her parents kind of creepy? Her mom says very little and her dad says far too much.

Add to it that they can't wait for Kim to finish feeding the baby to sit down to eat. Now that's just rude. Minus 9.

In South Africa

Back at the airport, our trip to Africa which starts off quietly enough. The ladies take a 16-hour flight where they remove their makeup and have some wine. Cynthia even laughs when NeNe removes an eyebrow and NeNe doesn't seem to mind.

Or at least she didn't hurt her. Plus 8 for a good beginning.

NeNe says the group is divided between the tall women (over 5'9") and the almost midgets. It seems like an exaggeration until you witness Phaedra and Kandi standing next to Cynthia and NeNe and realize she's almost not kidding. Plus 5.

How much luggage do these women need for a 10-day trip? Watching them haul it through the airport is just ridiculous. They can't even manage an elevator without help. And we wonder why other countries think Americans are dumb. Minus 10.

The hotel penthouse suite is stunning but before they even get there Marlo is already bitching that she won't share a bathroom. Well, since the host didn't know she was coming she should be thankful she isn't sharing a bed with NeNe.

Cheers to Africa

The bus ride to the hotel has Marlo giving the ladies lessons in etiquette. How much etiquette do you think they teach in prison? Minus 12 because we doubt it has anything to do with the proper way to pass the salt.

Marlo wants the names of the hotel staff that will be servicing their room and she wants to know if they call out sick. I guess when you've got a criminal history you expect the same from those around you. Minus 7. It pays to be cautious but not rude.

Kandi's great as Marlo's getting on her last nerve. Over breakfast she asks "Are you going to give us etiquette lessons all day?" And then she looks as though she'd like to throw Marlo overboard while they're on the yacht. Plus 10.

We never thought much of Cynthia but she hit an all time low this week. First she mocks Phaedra's robe over breakfast and then she gloats over how she was invited to Sheree's friend's dinner while NeNe and Marlo were not.

Minus 15 because the girl couldn't make it across the penthouse fast enough to share the news. Talk about a trouble maker.

Kim and KJ

Unsurprisingly, Marlo storms off to give Sheree a piece of her mind. The two women can't stop screeching at one another sniping about one anothers money and sexual history. It's all about how many houses, cars, and watches they have.

Minus 12. How about we count how many brain cells each has. That will be quicker.

As the rest of the group gapes at the brawling duo, NeNe delivers one of the best lines of the night: "Is this how I look in an argument because they look absolutely stupid."

Plus 10 for realizing it.

As Marlo yells for Sheree to go off and spend the night with her bleeping gay friends using a word that rhymes with maggot, Kandi gets the best dig in of the night. "Now I don't know etiquette but I know you're not suppose to say that."

It's all so stupid that it's actually entertaining and it almost has us looking forward to the rest of this African adventure.
